You can with a small css trick.

For your current tabs you can use this example code:

.vc_tta-tab:nth-child(1) a {
    background-color: #000;
}
.vc_tta-tab:nth-child(2) a {
    background-color: #f00;
}

For the above example the first tab has a black bg. and the second a red one.

This is for 2 tabs but if you have more tabs simply duplicated for each tab and change the number (3) (4) ect.

Try adding the hover state:

.vc_tta-tab:nth-child(1) a:hover {
    background-color: #000;
}

And for the active state:

.vc_tta-tabs-container .vc_active:nth-child(1) a {
    background-color: #000;
}
